Community Service Requirement

Service Learning Philosophy and Policy

Fuzhou Lakeside International School’s Service Learning program cultivates a sense of social and ethical responsibility in students, advances the school mission of creating a caring community, and fosters the development of the School’s core value of character. Service Learning is more than simply contributing to a fundraiser or collection drive; done properly, it links education to service and service to learning and therefore becomes an essential part of our co-curricular offerings. All students in the FLIS are encouraged to develop a sense of community service. High School students are required to complete 20 hours of satisfactory work/service for the School each year. The principle rationale behind this requirement is the strong belief on the part of the faculty and administration that a degree of self-giving in terms of work done for others is an integral part of effective education and a growing sense of personal responsibility. All Club and service organization sponsors should fill in forms documenting each hour of service for each student. Service done outside of FLIS can be used but must be authenticated by the head of academics who will assign its service credit value. Upon completion of the community service hours, the student must submit a letter stating the nature of the work, clearly indicating the amount of credit for the project, and signed by the project supervisor. NO Community Service credit will be awarded if permission by the Head of Student Affairs is not granted AND a formal letter is not submitted.

Fuzhou Lakeside International School Service Learning program encourages students to be good members of the community in three core areas:

In our immediate neighborhood, by entering partnerships with our local schools, hospitals and community centers.

In our country, by entering partnerships with humanitarian and philanthropic organizations

In our global community, by serving the needs of others through ADRA, Red Cross or any other NGO.
