讲到设计,许多人第一时间浮上心头的大概是平面设计:通过创造、结合多种符号、图片及文字传达讯息的视觉表现形式,常见于杂志、广告、产品包装等等。因此,看到福州西湖国际学校MYP课程表上的「数码设计」时,部分学子或许一时无法理解这门课的具体内容。本期推文,就由FLIS老师James Wood先生,带大家走进数码设计的世界。

When it comes to design, the first thing that comes to mind is probably graphic design: a form of visual expression that conveys a message through the creation and combination of various symbols, pictures and words, commonly found in magazines, advertisements, product packaging and so on. Therefore, when you see "Digital Design" on the MYP schedule of Fuzhou Lakeside International School, some students may not fully understand what it is, at least in the beginning. In this article, FLIS teacher Mr. James Wood will take you into the world of Digital Design.

据Wood老师介绍,数码设计融合了一切通过数字化创作的东西,包括标志、海报、视频/音频剪辑、2D动画、3D建模&动画,建筑以及介于两者之间的所有内容。在这门课上,学生会使用到一系列软件,比如常见的Ps, Ai, Pr, Blender(3D建模), Sketchup(3D建模), Open Shot(视频剪辑)等等。

According to Mr. Wood, Digital Design incorporates everything that is created digitally and this includes logos, posters, video & audio editing, 2D animation, 3D modeling & animation, architecture and everything in between. In this class, students will use a range of software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, Blender (3D modeling), Sketchup (Architecture), Open Shot (video editing) and more.

在实践中,我们发现数码设计课比想象中更有趣。比如3D建模单元让学生有机会设计一栋建筑、一处街景,有学生用软件熟练设计了飞机停机坪、便利店,而在国内,不少学子直到上了大学才第一次接触这类建模软件。本学期一些MYP学子学习的单元还包括图像处理与拟声音效,Wood老师向我们展示了Sally同学与Aina同学的课程作业。在图像处理单元中,学子需要完成两个任务,为Holly(女生)修一张美丽的电影试镜照,以及将Michael(男生)Ps成半人半动物的样子,借此,教师就可以通过成品考察学生对软件的掌握程度;拟声音效是一种为没有音频的视频添加音效的艺术,在这个单元中,学子需要先对一段无声视频做出判断,并在教室里就地取材,用已有物品模拟再现出他们认为视频中需要出现的声音并进行录制,最后再将音频添加到视频里。

In practice, we found that the Digital Design class was more interesting than expected. For example, the 3D modeling unit gave students the opportunity to design a city, with communities, landmarks and infrastructure. FLIS MYP students used Sketchup to skillfully design an airplane tarmac and a convenience store, whereas other students do not experience this type of modeling software until they go to college. This semester, some of the MYP students are also studying Image Manipulation and Foley Sound Effects, and Ms. Wood showed us the coursework of Sally and Aina. In the Image Manipulation unit, students completed two tasks, making Holly look more beautiful for a movie audition and turning Michael into a half animal and human species as a joke for his coworkers, through which the teacher can examine the students' mastery of the software through the finished product; Foley is the art of adding sound effects to videos that have no audio and is commonly used in the film industry. In this unit, students are asked to make a judgment about a video without audio, use objects in the classroom to simulate and record the sounds they think need to be in the video, and then finally add sounds to the video.

这些有趣的实践激发了学子的想象、给了他们创作的自由,也锻炼了技术,让他们有能力独立执行项目。数码设计课的考核并不是看学生是否设计出了特别惊人的东西,而更关注他们在过程中所花费的功夫。围绕IB设计循环而定的评估标准考察学生的多项能力,诸如他们是否有能力解释设计需求?是否能完善自己的设计方案并执行,测试设计方法?由此,IB学习者的种种特质也在学习过程中一一浮现:积极探究、勤于思考、善于交流、勇于尝试……Wood老师表示,在FLIS,他作为领路人和导师负责向学生提供知识和指引,帮助他们掌握技能;学生要进入设计师的角色,学习上述的工具及技能,在真实世界的情境中把这些知识运用起来。在这样的过程循环中,学生也变得越来越独立,越来越积极主动学习——并不是只是在这一门课上。

These fun practices stimulate the students' imagination, give them the freedom to create, and arm them with skills to commence and work through projects themselves. The assessment in the Digital Design isn’t marked on the student’s ability to design something amazing, it includes all the work towards this. The assessment criteria centered around the IB Design Cycle examines a number of student competencies, such as are they able to explain and justify the needs. Are they able to develop their design ideas and execute them, testing the design method? As a result, the traits of the IB learner emerge: Inquirer, Thinker, Communicator, Risk-Taker… Mr. Wood said that at FLIS, his role in class is not just a teacher, but a guide and mentor. He provides guidance and knowledge to the students, and students are expected to take on the role of designers, learn all of the above and put this knowledge into real world situations. In this process, students also become more independent and self-motivated - not just in this one class but this translates into the real world.
