Summer School | FLIS夏校:IB学习者的夏日修行

七月上旬,喜讯传来,经过多年耕耘,福州西湖国际学校出色的教学质量得到国际文凭组织IBO(International Baccalaureate Organization)的认可,正式收获认证成为IB(MYP)世界学校。数日后,刚刚从小学部毕业、即将进入MYP项目的FLIS学子前往位于三明将乐的天籁蛟湖国际研学营地,一场奇妙而丰沛的夏日修行,就此展开!

In early July, the good news came. Fuzhou Lakeside International School had received an official letter authorizing FLIS to be an IB MYP World School. A few days later after this momentous occasion, FLIS students who had just graduated from the Primary and were about to enter the IB(MYP) program went to the Jiao-Hu Skylark Field Studies Center in Jiangle, Sanming, where a wonderful and enriching summer practice began!

为期两周的国际夏校项目乃福州西湖国际学校学术提升体系的一部分。结合FLIS MYP教育目标——培养有原则、关爱他人、均衡发展、适应当下与未来世界的领袖——国际夏校项目旨在通过丰富多样的课程与素质活动提高学生的学术水平,增强学习自驱力,为MYP阶段学习打下坚实基础。

The two-week International Summer School program is part of the academic enhancement system of Fuzhou Lakeside International School. Combined with the FLIS MYP educational goal of nurturing principled, caring, balanced leaders of today and tomorrow, the International Summer School program is designed to enhance students' academic performance and lay a solid foundation for their MYP studies through a wide variety of curricular and qualitative activities.

FLIS夏校课程经过精心设计,兼顾课堂内外,做到了智识、情商与感受力的平衡。课堂内是知识的盛宴,学子时而在教师带领下探秘数制演变,了解二进制带来的便利;时而针对英文文法查缺补漏,厘清不同时态运用,也在每晚的分级阅读课上享受集体阅读时光,培养良好的阅读习惯;公共演讲课堂则是学子集思广益,在一次次头脑风暴中运用语言碰撞奇思妙想的天地,课程结束之际,每个小组都设计了一座独特的主题乐园,声情并茂地向观众展示他们的学习成果。

The FLIS Summer School program is carefully designed to strike a balance between the intellectual, social-emotional and sensory aspects inside and outside of the classroom. Inside the classroom is a feast of knowledge, students are led by teachers to explore the evolution of the number systems and understand the convenience brought by the binary system; at other times, they check and fill in the gaps in English grammar, clarify the use of different tenses, and enjoy group reading time in nightly reading class to develop good reading habits. The TEDDy Talk classroom is a place for students to brainstorm and collide with fantastic ideas, and at the end of the program, each group designed a unique theme park to present their learning outcomes to the audience with great emotion and vivid descriptions.

课堂之外,食育活动中,学子亲力亲为制作、品尝美食,他们也通过户外活动学习了桨板、飞盘、皮划艇等水陆运动技巧,十三天的集体生活也锻炼了孩子的独立生活能力与团体协作能力:每日清晨,所有人都要整理自己的内务,再美味的餐品当前,也要等同学到齐了再开餐;大家热心地向每个需要帮助的同学伸出援手,与此同时,良好的学习、社交氛围也从侧面鼓励孩子打开心门,更加积极地投入这场夏日修行之中。就有学子表示,从前的自己羞怯、内向,但在这样踊跃发言的团体里备受感染,现在也愿意主动参与课堂讨论、举手回答问题了。

Outside of the classroom, the students made and tasted the food themselves, and learned the skills of paddle boarding, Frisbee, kayaking, and other water and land sports through outdoor activities. The thirteen days of group life also enhanced the children’s ability to live independently and work together as a group: every morning, everyone had to tidy up their own chores, and they waited for their classmates to arrive to start the meal; and they enthusiastically extended a helping hand to every classmate in need of help. At the same time, the learning and social atmosphere also encourages the students to open their hearts and minds, and to participate more actively in this summer practice. Some students said that they used to be shy and introverted, but they were infected by the enthusiastic group and are now willing to take the initiative to participate in class discussions and raise their hands to answer questions.

夏校与平时课堂的一大不同,在于环境的变化。半开放式的课堂令学子感到安全且舒适,远离城市喧嚣、亲近大自然的营地环境也十分优质,周末龙栖山徒步、鹿苑观光等活动进一步强化了孩子的感受力——尽管我们可以从书本上学到种种知识,但当青山绿水如画卷般在眼前铺开,当脚踩坚实土地眼望山巅,在烈日当头略感疲惫时突然踏入清凉的溪流山涧,当梅花鹿低低鸣叫、温顺地靠近你讨要食物时……那种感受与往日截然不同。在千篇一律风景中渐渐钝化的感官,仿佛也逐渐变得灵敏起来。

One of the major differences between summer school and the usual classroom is the change of environment. Semi-open classrooms make students feel safe and comfortable, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the close to nature camp environment is fantastic. The weekend hiking in Longqi Mountain, deer park sightseeing and other activities further strengthened the students’ sensibility - although we can learn from books about all kinds of knowledge, when the green mountains and clear water unfolded as a picture in front of their eyes, when their feet stepped on the solid ground as they looked at the top of the mountain, when the hot sun and mountain road made them feel slightly tired and then they suddenly steeped into cool streams, when the plum deer murmuring, meekly close to them ask for food… during these moments students achieved a totally different understanding than from just reading a book. The senses, which have been gradually dulled by the uniformity of the landscape, seem to have gradually become more aware.


任何经历都可以化为人生宝贵的财富。现在,学子们拥有了经历,他们能从中提炼出什么?是旺盛的求知欲?是点点滴滴累积起来的自信?是对自然环境的责任感?每个人都有不同的答案。两周时间或许很难给一个人带来脱胎换骨的变化,但几位夏校老师在日常授课中也发现,学子身上逐渐涌现IB学习者的诸多特质:积极探究、知识渊博、勤于思考、善于交流、坚持原则、胸襟开阔、懂得关爱、勇于尝试、全面发展、及时反思……他们当然没有彻底变成另一个人,但相较从前,每个孩子与优秀IB学习者的距离似乎也更近了一些。

Any experience can be turned into a valuable asset in life. Now that the students have gained experiences, what can they distill from them? Is it a strong desire to learn? Is it the confidence accumulated little by little? Is it a sense of responsibility for the natural environment? Everyone has a different answer. Two weeks may not be enough to bring about a radical change in a person, but in their daily lessons, several summer school teachers have noticed that many of the traits of an IB learner have gradually emerged in their students: Inquirer, Knowledgeable, Thinker, Communicator, Principled, Open-Minded, Caring, Risk-Taker, Balanced and Reflective. They certainly haven't become completely different people, but compared to the past, each student seems to be a little closer to being a conscious IB learner.
