School Events

Reading Together

March marked Fuzhou Lakeside International School (FLIS)’s traditional “Madness Readathon,” during which students enthusiastically participated in the event, enjoying the annual inter-school reading extravaganza where winners were determined by the number of pages read or the quality of their reading reports.

Typically, the Readathon is participated in mainly by students in Grades 1–12, but this year, ECE students joined in a creative way! “Reading Together” was a special ECE project that supported the school’s Readathon month, bringing together Kindergarten students and Grade 4 learners in a meaningful cross-age collaboration.

During their first meeting in the ECE library, Grade 4 students introduced Readathon and other related activities: How can you earn a pizza party reward? (The kids wanted that!) How do you fill out a “Reading Star” sharing card? (The kids wanted to do that, too!) What is the “YES! I'm the author” activity? (The kids have their own handmade picture books!) Not only that, but they also shared what they read and why reading matters with the kindergarteners.

After the first meeting, Ms Darya and Mr Damon, who organized the event, held a reflection session. Students and teachers discussed various details together: How do I feel about Day 1? What did I learn? What am I proud of, and what was challenging for our team? During the session, teachers and students also discussed reading strategies for the next meeting, laying the groundwork for future shared reading sessions.

When they met again, ECE students chose the books, and Grade 4 students read to their small groups. To capture the children’s attention, the fourth-graders pulled out all the stops—some used glove puppets, while others provided bilingual narration. The kindergarteners listened intently and even prepared drawings as gifts for the fourth-graders, creating a warm and engaging shared experience. For the final visit, PYP students hosted a visit in the FLIS library, welcoming their younger peers into a new learning space. Having interacted before, everyone got along much more smoothly this time. The fourth graders introduced the kindergarteners to the library’s borrowing and returning procedures. After reading together, they presented the kindergarteners with a special gift: the “Reading Star” sharing cards that the little ones had been eagerly anticipating since the very first meeting!

This project fostered an inclusive reading environment where younger students not only felt part of a larger learning community, but also discovered a new way of enjoying books—reading together with older peers, like reading with friends, but with guiding hands. At the same time, Grade 4 students could put different communication skills into use, while also showing care and responsibility, learning patience, and gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to be a teacher.
