What do you do on Friday night, the most expected and relaxing night of the week, to treat yourself after a week of hard work? Last Friday, five students and teachers from Fuzhou Lakeside International School came to the DiamondreaM Bookstore to share their stories of reading with the audience.

In today's world of highly developed internet and diverse entertainment options, reading a book immersively has become a luxury for many people. Mr. Jon, a FLIS foreign teacher, took the stage first to introduce "The Lord of the Rings" series, written by Mr. Jon's Oxford alumnus, the famous British writer J.R.R. Tolkien. Mr. Jon said that when he was in high school and university, he rarely read for fun, but after came to work in China, he started casually reading, enjoying the pleasure of being fascinated by a story. Elsie from FLIS IEP program said that reading not only keeps her mind sharp but also improves her vocabulary and spoken English. Wickey, who came to China from the US, used to watch videos as her favorite leisure activity, but because of the platform and language, her interest has shifted to reading since she came to Fuzhou, and now she is the most enthusiastic reader in the family.

"When one falls asleep and dreams, it means waking up in another life." So says the Serbian writer Milorad Pavić. Can we assume that opening a book is like falling into a dream, and that the reader also enters another world, opening his or her eyes to observe a life that is either new or familiar? Interestingly, the works shared by students and teachers that day seemed all related to fantasy and science fiction genres, such as "The Lord of the Rings", which takes us on a journey to Middle-earth, the stories of "The Winter Wolf" (shared by Elsie) and "When You Reach Me" (shared by Giselle) both revolve around time travel, "Worm" (shared by Wickey), whose main character has superpowers, and "Warriors" (shared by Sally) tells the life and battles of the ThunderClan cats in the forest...

In addition to enjoyable immersion time, reading also brings a lot of gains to FLIS teachers and students. Giselle shared her experience of reading "When You Reach Me", saying that she can sometimes relate to the main character because she was nearly the same age as her and that instead of trying to save the whole world the main character just trying to save one specific person, which made her feel more realistic and heartfelt. Sally was inspired by the Warriors series and wrote several fanfictions - she posted her long, short, and poetry pieces on the Warriors Fanfiction Wiki, which received a lot of praise and comments from Warriors fans!

The enthusiasm of FLIS teachers and students for reading also infected the audience, and the fluent full English presentation impressed everyone, and questions about reading and English expression came one after another. It is worth mentioning that the students and teachers not only brought their recommended books, but also introduced their reading channels, authors' backgrounds, reading difficulties, and so on. The generation that grew up in the electronic age is also clearly characterized by the times in terms of reading: e-books, online serials, fan forums… New readers are picking up, collecting, and exchanging more relevant information and feelings through the Internet, in addition to books, and now this evening's sharing session also entered the latest link in the chain, forming a more complete reading experience. Thanks to the full support of DiamondreaM Bookstore for this event. "There’s a lot to say when it comes to books", we look forward to the next sharing in the name of books!
