FLIS TALK

FLIS TALK: Career Motivation

Welcome back to school! The first FLIS TALK of this semester was held on February 15. Career choice is undoubtedly a huge choice in life, but it doesn't always have to be "one and done".

The first guest to share his experience with us was Mr. Achraf, a PE teacher familiar to FLIS students. Coming from a sports family and having had a passion for handball since he was a child, he joined a professional team at the age of 17. In 2010, Mr. Achraf's career took a turn towards coaching. He started out teaching children under the age of 14, and then coached in Tunisia, Bahrain, and Oman. He has seven years of teaching experience and holds a handball coaching degree from the International Handball Federation and the Canadian Coaching Association.

During his presentation, Mr. Achraf reflected on the challenges he has faced in his career as a player and coach. He found that an open mind and a heartfelt love for the sport helped him achieve his dreams one after another. He often travels to foreign countries to work with people he has never met, and sometimes a team has players from all over the world, so it is important to communicate with others, learn about their culture and learn different skills. In addition, to develop a hobby into a career as an athlete, it requires consistent training, extreme self-discipline, and attention to health in order to achieve better results and improve oneself.

Another guest speaker of the day was Mr. Alaaddin, General Manager of Fuzhou Alaaddin Import & Export Co., who is also the member of Fuzhou Municipal People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries in 2021, Guest Professor of Minjiang University, "Honorary Citizen" of Fuzhou, and parent of a FLIS student. Twenty-eight years ago, with a desire for Chinese martial arts, Mr. Alaaddin from Turkey chose to study in China, and by chance, he fell in love with Chinese culture and decided to start a family here. He first earned his college tuition by translating at various trade shows and then opened a foreign trade company. His career success led him to a bigger dream: to become a bridge between China and Turkey. He opened his first Turkish restaurant in Fuzhou to bring his hometown food to the blessed state, and at the same time, he wrote books and made videos to introduce Chinese culture to Turkey.

Mr. Alaaddin has received many honors for his business achievements and contributions to the friendship and exchange between the two countries, and has even been seen in state visits and national business forums. However, he did not shy away from the setbacks he encountered in business and told the FLIS students that they should not pass the buck when they encounter difficulties, but that setbacks are also a way to gain experience and always see the positive side of things. He encouraged the students to embrace their dreams and not to stop dreaming, but to keep going.

In China, Mr. Alaaddin learned the saying, “all for one and one for all." He shared it with FLIS students, and he himself is a firm practitioner of this saying: during the epidemic, he worked as a community volunteer to serve the residents of his neighborhood, and when the earthquake struck southern and central Turkey, he actively helped raise money to help his country and its people.

The experiences of the two guests seem to be different, and their fields of work do not intersect, but we can see a lot of commonalities in their experiences: on the road to career choice, both of them set the tone due to their interests, are willing to put in all efforts to realize their dreams, and maintain an open mind in the face of different cultural environments. After their initial dreams were realized, both of them did not stop there, but kept setting new goals, new dreams, and letting their passion become inexhaustible fuel to light up their career path. What new insights did the audience have? This semester, FLIS TALK will continue to invite elites from all walks of life to give students a glimpse of a certain line of work, and we hope you will continue to gain some love, new knowledge, and inspiration. Please stay tuned!
