CAASEL Center

CAASEL Center has been open for several months. Students of Fuzhou Lakeside International School have grown fond of attending CAASEL and love to spend time there learning new things, being creative, and experiencing nature. What is CAASEL like? Let's find out!

CAASEL, the Collaborative Academic, Arts, Social, Emotional Learning Center is the ‘Second Campus’ of Fuzhou Lakeside International School. This natural outdoor learning environment stands along the bank of Min River. In terms of curriculum design, CAASEL Center combines the curriculum guidelines of Columbia University with the research from the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. It replaces the traditional classroom with a more diversified environment for students to practice hands-on inquiry-based learning in order to promote both academic and personal achievements through the development of their emotional intelligence. The students gain spiritual growth from the natural environment and think and reflect on themselves through interacting with others. Teachers incorporate a holistic education into lessons with the guidance of a physiologist. In this way, students become active learners and are capable of achieving more.

Every afternoon, except Wednesday and Friday, CAASEL welcomes a group of visiting Primary students from FLIS. The courses they receive include Art, Pottery, Science, Agriculture, and Animal Husbandry. On this particular day, students, under the guidance of Teddy, a teacher who teaches planting and breeding, helped to identify and weed out the withered or rotten leaves in the vegetable garden. Those little assistants did their farm work with great care and patience. Here, the children not only learn about farming, but also enjoy working. Later, under the guidance of Teddy, they fed the animals on the farm. It was so exciting!

Secondary students spend a whole day in CAASEL every Wednesday. Sometimes they learn the art of flower arrangement with Ms. Emily or learn the art and skill of ceramics with Mr. Jacob in the pottery classroom to learn how to endow the clay with the soul and shape of the ideal container. Of course, they can also choose to immerse themselves in the world of fine arts and express themselves with a brush or a knife. Students who need a break and some time to relax can look out of the window to appreciate the garden. This helps students to rid themselves of any emotional stress in their personal lives and gain focus.

What you have seen is only a small part of a day at the CAASEL Center. Students are sure to have a deeper appreciation of all that CAASEL has to offer. We hope this innovative natural environment brings students a positive learning experience and some much needed time to destress!
