NEW YEAR MESSAGE

Fall of 2017 witnessed some exciting changes to FLIS Secondary School. We welcomed many new students and staff to the FLIS family. We also switched the schedule to an A and B day approach with three 90 minute blocks each day and two forty five minute blocks. The block schedule allows us to incorporate more project based learning and stress the higher level thinking skills. There were many wonderful achievements during the first semester many of which were acknowledge and celebrated in our weekly assemblies. I am very pleased with our HSP 1 students as the entire class progressed and are now in HSP2 and thus one step closer to being mainstreamed students. Our current mainstream students are all progressing towards the 24 to 26 credits they need to graduate. In order to serve our students better next semester we are adding a college entrance test preparation class and reorganizing our life skills classes so that we can have an additional opportunity to target learning skills that are of need and interest to students. We will continue our mandatory after school tutoring program for students who are struggling in classes and target additional students if teachers find areas that need to be improved. Students at FLIS benefit from the longer class periods, the emphasis on higher level thinking skills, and the individualized tutoring that will be offered.
