STEAM Fair

The FLIS 2022 STEAM fair has come to a close. Every year FLIS holds a STEAM FAIR in order to encourage students to pose questions for which they must seek out answers and to satisfy their own curiosity about the world around them. The quality of most of the projects this year was fantastic.  With each new fair year the overall quality of the projects has been rising steadily.

There was one major difference in the secondary STEAM fair this year. This had to with scoring. In the past, there has been a first, second, third place with an honorable mention or two. However because we are an MYP program it was decide to extend the 0-8 grading scale to the projects.

A total of eight projects scored a 6. Two projects scored a 7.

One of the projects to score a 7 was titled, Which Parachute lands the Safest. This was a very detailed project which tested whether variables such as rubber, plastic or card paper would offer the safest landing.  The data concluded that plastic was the winner.

The other project to score a 7 explored the question, What can we do to improve our sleep quality?  It was shown, through many trials, that drinking hot milk did improve their quality of sleep.

Among the 6’s there were projects such as  What is the Best Insulator to keep Ice From Melting,  Ankle protection and Which kind of sunglasses gives the best protection against UV rays.

In addition to experiments we also had engineering products that designed something to solve a question- such as an inexpensive bridge, a solar powered car and even an edible spoon!

Most students used this opportunity to the fullest to explore and answer questions of their choice instead of just being handed down information. All in all, it was another great STEAM fair at FLIS!

The FLIS 2022 Primary STEAM Fair has come to a close. It was open to volunteers from grades one to 5.  As always, the submitted projects showed a great deal of science know-how and creativity!

Over all first place went to the 5th grade project entitled, “What makes our muscles strong?” They investigated whether positive thinking or immersing the muscles in cold water would produce better results. Everything was top-notch about this presentation- the board, the interview, and the procedures. Truly a job well done!

2nd place went to Freezing Sodas present by third grade students. We have all had the problem of leaving a soda in the freezer too long and then coming back to find a frozen block of carbonated water instead of a cool refreshing soda- and these young scientists investigated that problem, trying to find out which drink out of 6 would freeze the slowest. In the end, they found out that the drinks with the most sugar content froze the slowest. So keep that in mind the next time you put a Coke, or diet coke in the fridge.

3rd place went to grade 5- Can Music change a person’s mood? Usually, if we listen to a happy song it perks us up a bit, these intrepid scientists put that thought to the test. They played happy music, no music, and then gathered and categorized all of the data, proving scientifically that yes happy music can change our mood for the better.

First honorable mention went to the project Moldy Lemon. Have you ever wanted to do an experiment involving mold and lemons- well this group did and won a prize to boot!

2nd honorable mention went to another food theme- Bananas out of the fridge. It dealt with the factors that lead to a banana changing from a delectable edible yellow to a not so delectable brown.

A big congratulations to all of the primary students who submitted projects. We were impressed by each and every one!
