Over the years, Fuzhou Lakeside International School has always attached great importance to campus safety. Regular fire safety drills and school bus drills have become a tradition, and FLIS has incorporated relevant safety knowledge into its curriculum, organizing several visits to fire stations to learn about firefighting equipment. To ensure the complete safety of students on campus, FLIS also believes that it is imperative that we establish a sound system to prevent sexual assault and raise students' awareness of self-protection in the face of frequent cases of sexual assault on school campuses around the world.

FLIS is now implementing The Protect Yourself Rules program learning project for all students and teachers. Produced by the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Foundation in conjunction with Wonder Media and the Joshua Center on Child Sexual Abuse at the University of Washington, the program has been developed and scripted by child advocates, therapists, and national scholars. It is a national education curriculum focused on educating children about what to do when confronted with abusive behavior, safe and unsafe touches, and other physical and emotional abuse. It also teaches children about the dangers of ‘bullying’ and how to stay safe on the internet and social media.

In the primary classroom, teachers make sure students understand what is off-limits to their bodies, what is safe to touch, and what is not. What should they do if they encounter an unsafe touch? If someone does something that makes them feel uncomfortable and asks them to keep it a secret, should they follow his or her instructions? The students had a great time discussing the topic and remembering the rules to protect themselves, and FLIS has different learning content for different grades, with some grades also learning about physiology and sex. We hope that the children will become more aware of the importance of self-protection, and FLIS will continue to educate them on school safety!
